A few weeks ago I published an article at about FREE utilities and tools available on the web and I got flooded by requests asking if I knew of any more tools. So I decided to go back through my list a favorite bookmarks and find the 7 best FREE web marketing tools on the web, so here they are:

1. Link Popularity Check

Now days ,just about every major search engines rank web pages based on the number of links that point to them. If you want your site to rank well, you must have lots of incoming links. Link Popularity Check is a great FREE windows based application put out by the same people who wrote Arelis (
The program quickly checks how many incoming links each one of your domains have in all the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista and HotBot. I have not come across any limit to the maximum number of sites you can check at one time.
A great utility you should definitely have.

2. Keyword-Explorer

I must be honest with this one. This is an application I wrote, because I got so frustrated with the existing keyword finding tools out there.
It allows you to find keywords from all the major Overture search engines as well as from Yahoo. Its fast, it is very efficient and it works well.
I use it almost everyday to create Adsense sites and to look for keywords for Adword campaigns.
Its complete FREE!

LiveJournal is very easy to use (ok..maybe not as easy as but still easy enough for a complete newbies to get going within a few minutes.
Blogs have become an indispensable method in getting websites visited by search engines and having a few quality blogs on hand makes the chances of getting your next web projected listed in the search engines much, much easier.
LiveJournal also has a "paid" option as well, but when starting out the FREE option is very good and easy to use.

5. ScanR

ScanR is an absolutely amazing service. Its allows you to send in your images or photos and have then sent back to you in a searchable PDF format (all for FREE !!!)/ Imagine you go to a business meeting where you brainstorm on a white board for a while. You jump up with your trusty digital camera enabled cell phone and take some photos of the white board. While you at it, you quickly "snap" some shots of some proposal paperwork.
Then you email the photos off to ScanR and within no-time they send you back a searchable PDF document of all your information.
Check out their home page for what you can actually do with this service, this is an immensely valuable service.
Bookmark this one..

I'd guess that this site's name was inspired by, but provides a very handy service monitor your web services.
I quote from their website "website and server monitoring service with personalized interactive interface, where you can add server performance and availability tests, get uptime reports, add contacts to get the alert notifications."

It wasn't that long ago that you had to pay $30-$80 a month to have the same service as these guys are providing for FREE. So if you need your web servers monitored these guys could be just the one.

7. CoolArchive

A site that claims to have 4000 icons in 125 different categories. The site does have a lot of advertising on it and the occasional pop up does make its appearance, but if you are looking for an icon for that next software project or for your next web site then this could the site.
If you want to make a favicon (short for favorites icon) for your site simply take one of the icon from and then visit is a free favicon generator that will make your site stand out from the crowd, especially when the visitor clicks on their list of favorites and your site has a distinctive icon associated with it.

All of the tools I mentioned above are absolutely FREE, none of their are affiliate links or anything like that.

Avoid Loosing Thousands of Dollars From Your website.

By Bruce Hearder

Imagine this scenario.

You've just released a new product onto the web.
You've sent out all the marketing material and you've signed up as many affiliates as possible and sit back, grab your favorite beverage and wait for the dollars to roll in.

You wait, and you wait.. Nothing.. Not a single sale..

You then think "I'll give it another hour and two and see if anything happens then".
You know your affiliates have been promoting your product, you've been getting the emails, but no sales have occurred..

You start to think maybe something is wrong with your site. So you decide to click on a link in one of your affiliates email and you get the dreaded "404 - File not Found error".

Then you suddenly realize that the link you gave all your affiliates was wrong.
You told them to visit but the real location is

So you dash into your site with your FTP tool and quickly rename the page to the new name, and within minutes sales start coming in..

Phew.. But how many lost sales? How many thousands of dollars have you just lost??

It freighting, and it can happen so easily..

Wouldn't it have be good to have some sort of safe guard in place, that sent you an email when the error first occurred with the very first visitor.

Well, there is such a tool. Im going to show you how to implement it for FREE and very easy to setup.

To make this work we need to modify our sites .htaccess file (this file lives in the root directory of your hosting account).

If you don't have a .htaccess simply make one using notepad
(For more information on this see )

Then add the following line to bottom of the file.

ErrorDocument 404 /404error.php

Save the file and update your server.

Now we need to make the 404error.php file..

Simply open Notepad on your PC and paste in the following code :

< ?PHP
$email = "";
$url = $host.$_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"];
$referrer = trim($_SERVER["HTTP_REFERER"]);
if ($url != 'favico.ico' and $url != 'robots.txt')
if ($referrer == '')
   $referrer = 'An Unknown source OR someone who directly keyed in the link';
$subject = '404 Error on '.$host;
$message = 'Hi
A visitor from '.$referrer.' tried unsuccessfully to  access '.$url.' You may want to try and fix this error';
$headers = 'MIME-Version: 1.0'."\r\n";
$headers .= 'Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1'."\r\n";
$headers .= 'From: 404 Watcher'."\r\n";
header("HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found");
header('Location: '.$host);

Make sure that you change the line that starts with $email to have your email address. No one on the web will see that email address.
It is the address that you want all the errors sent to.

Save the file and copy 404error.php file up to your web site's root document.

Now try it out. Try typing in a filename that does not exist like and see what happens.

The user will get redirected to the home page of the site and an email containing the error message will be sent to you.

Its now up to you to fix any errors that might occur and saves yourself thousands of lost dollars in lost sales..

If money is a bit tight, or you are just starting out, then making full use of tools freely available on the web is a MUST.

There are plenty of FREE tools out there; you just have know where to look.

Google's Own Keyword Selector Tool

( )

One of the first things you need to do with every online project is to find out how many people are searching for that topic.

Google, the most important search engine on the web, gives us this great little tool that shows how many people searched for a particular topic in the previous 30 days, as well as what keywords they used to do that search..

A site well worth book marking.

Blogger - Google Own Blogging Service

( )

Blogger is very easy to use, and if used the correct way can be a great way to get newly developed sites indexed by the search engines.

You can setup as many blogs as you wish post as often as you wish, and say almost anything you want.

Web Site Code checker

( )

These days it's very easy to quickly put up a website using your favorite WYSIWYG HTML editor, but sometimes they can generate absolutely nasty web code, that can make search engines almost choke just trying to read your site.

Just because internet explorer displays the site OK, doesn't mean that the search engines can read your site properly.

So make sure every HTML page you put up on the web is 100%b HTML clean and correct.

Not only will the search engines love you, but so will your bank balance.

Steve's Templates - Free Web Templates

( )

Steve's templates provide a whole suite of free web templates that you can import into your HTML editor and edit to fir your website. The template found here are very professional and they cover both personal and business style templates.

( )

This site is a platform for free search engine optimization tools.

It also offers a great little FIREFOX plug-in that allows you to access all the SEO Tools on the site, simply by right clicking on your mouse whilst using FIREFOX.

It allows you to find all sorts of information about a site, such as:

-WHOIS Information

-How many back links the site has

-The Keyword Density on the Page

-Page Size Checker

-HTML validator (uses see above)

-Check a sites robots.txt

Plus a lot more... If you use FireFox then get this plug-in, I can't live without it any more.

If you don't use FIREFOX then go to and start using it... It’s the BEST!!

Open Office

( )

Let me quote directly from their website

" is a multi platform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. Compatible with all other major office suites, the product is free to download, use, and distribute. "

Basically Open Office is a FREE alternative to Microsoft Office. It can read and write most if not all the standard Office files.

The aspect I like about it is that its built in word processor (write) can load Microsoft Word documents and then you can save them as standard PDF documents.

This means that you can create your own e-books and reports without having to buy expensive PDF creators.

Give it a go... It's well worth while.

All of the tools I mentioned above are absolutely FREE.

I use almost all of them on a daily basis, so don't waste your hard earned money on expensive tools, use these FREE one.

WordPress is a fantastic piece of software, and what is even more amazing its Open Source, meaning it will cost you NOTHING!! And you get the source code to !!

Although its not one of the easiest software packages to learn to navigate, it sure packs heaps of power under the hood and once you start to learn some of the basics of WordPress and blogging in general, you will begin to appreciate these features more and more.

There are 2 ways to install WordPress.
1. You can visit and download the full application here, and then manually install it on your server. If you do go down this path, then make sure you check out the following installation guides

WordPress's Famous 5 Minute Installation guide (check it out at )

But an even easier way to install WordPress is to install it using Fantastico that is included with just about every cPanel installation on the planet.

You can log into your cPanel application, and at the bottom of all the icons you see on the main startup page is an icon with a "funny" name called FANTASTICO

Fantastico is way to install all sort of open source application on your server for FREE.

Find the WordPress link on the left hand side of the screen (in the blogs section), and click on it.

Then move across to the right hand side of the screen an click on the word that say "New Installation" - It actually a link but it doesn't have an underline under it.

This pops up a very simple form (and the only form you have to fill out).

Put in your blog details, like what you are going to call it, what you want as login details plus a few other bits and pieces and press the button at the bottom.

Within seconds, you will be taken to another page that will show you the login details for your blog and away you go..

It just could not be easier way to install WordPress..

No messing about with databases, no FTP'ing files back and forth and no messing about setting file permission etc.

Harnessing the Power of Robots.txt

robots-txtOnce we have a website up and running, we need to make sure that all visiting search engines can access all the pages we want them to look at.

Sometimes, we may want search engines to not index certain parts of the site, or even ban other SE from the site all together.

This is where a simple, little 2 line text file called robots.txt comes in.

Robots.txt resides in your websites main directory (on LINUX systems this is your /public_html/ directory), and looks something like the following: Continue reading

Redirecting web traffic to a new location

signpostsIf you have to move a website from one domain to another, it will mean that all the links pointing to your old site would now be lost and would generate the dreaded 404 error when visitors came in via old search engine listing or links.

The best way to preserve your links, and have visitors end up on their required page is to setup a redirect from the old domain to the new one. Continue reading
